The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 3rd June the Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley for a stableford competition and found an empty course in excellent condition under heavy skies. Buoyed by the return of a few old friends the group got away before time and progress was very good.
The heavy atmosphere and soft fairways made the course play long but good scores were to be returned with Wichai Tananusorn setting the gross standard for the day with eighty for 35 points. Craig Thomas posted 36 points for a share of second place and Robbie Taylor rediscovered his form with an impressive 39 points for the win.
Tony Thorne, on his return to action, shared the ‘2’s pot with Robbie Taylor after his fine effort on the ninth, Robbie’s coming on the sixteenth.
Rabbi’s free beer was won by Russell Meiers and the Booby Bevy went to Ken Grimes after a dismal display and the lowest points score. Green Valley as usual did not disappoint and a good day was had by all.
Grimoldby brightens the gloom
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Burapha on Wednesday, 5th June, to play a stableford event on the quality course which did not disappoint despite heavy rain the day before and the threat of more on the day. However, it came to nothing and the humidity and heavy cloud cover stayed with the group throughout.
The allocated nines were A and B and with many golfers still “new” to the course it was left to the older hands to lead the show. Thus third place was shared by Mr Len and Swede Tomas Nilsson with 34 points with the form man Robbie Taylor trumping them with 36 points for second. The winner, Martin Grimoldby, played the course with aplomb, his long drives making a mockery of the soft conditions and he ended with 37 points from a quality best gross of 76.
Tomas Nilsson took the ‘2’s pot with a good effort on A6 and elsewhere the Booby Bevy went to old friend Masashi Iizumi on his first round back, playing his customary low scoring loosener after a few months of golfing inactivity in Japan.
Rabbi’s non-winners free beer went to new member Kevin Cumming. What a splendid golfing day Burapha had provided, despite the gloomy conditions.
Colour of the day – Emerald groan
What should have been a very pleasant Friday at Emerald turned into a nightmare on 7th June when the Pattaya Golf Society visited Emerald to play a stableford event and found the course in a shocking state with fourteen fairways scarified and bare for huge tracts, without so much as a warning at check-in or any indication on the course that these areas were GUR.
In truth there is probably not enough white paint in the whole of Ban Chang to cope with the problem. No wonder the course was empty, and empty it will probably remain for the next few months.
For the record, scores were Chris Walsh (35), Wichai Tananusorn (34), Alan Flynn and Dave Plaiter (31). Masashi Iizumi took the ‘2’s pot for his fine effort on fifteen.
