BANGKOK, 3 July 2013 The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has conducted a feasibility study on the impact of the future expansion plan on the environment surrounding Suvarnabhumi airport, as the number of passengers is expected to rise each year.

The study, also known as the strategic environmental assessment (SEA), will find out whether the development will degrade the air quality, exacerbate noise levels, lower ground density, and reduce the efficiency of the flood management system.

The plan includes the expansion of the passenger terminal to the east of the airport, the constructions of a new concourse as well as additional infrastructure and the employing of a consulting firm. According to Deputy Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport Group Captain Samai Chandhorn, the plan is expected to take 6 years to complete.

The findings will be used in determining the scope of the development plan to promote environmental, economic, social and technological sustainability. The project was approved by the Cabinet in 2010 to increase the capacity of the airport to accommodate 15 million more air travelers each year.
