A five-day weekend for many, the Dec. 28-Jan. 1 period saw area beaches packed with both foreign tourists and Thais, many of them from Bangkok and nearby provinces.
Foreigners frolicked in the waters of Pattaya, Jomtien and Wong Amat beaches while Thais spread out on mats and ate their fill of barbecued seafood.
Beach chair vendor Kritsadakorn Eupongkarun said business in Jomtien Beach was up over last year, which he hopes will bode well for the rest of high season.
