BANGKOK– The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has taken measures to ensure there are no shortages of agricultural supplies and jobs for workers who have been affected by the COVID-19 situation.
The Secretary-General of the Office of Agricultural Economics, Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, said the country’s agricultural sector has the capacity to produce adequate produce, such as rice, seafood, livestock, palm oil, cassava, coconut and sugarcane, throughout the year. About 41 million chicken eggs are produced each day, while people in the country consume 40 million eggs daily. There will be no shortage of eggs, and the country can still export some eggs, if there is the demand.
The Office of Agricultural Economics has coordinated with the Department of Livestock Development, the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Agriculture to distribute agricultural produce to different areas.
The Department of Agriculture has worked with provincial agriculture and cooperatives offices and district-level agencies to provide agricultural knowledge to farmers and workers who have returned to their home provinces. A total of 882 Agricultural Productivity Efficiency Increasing Learning centers, and its network of more than 10,000 partners, are working to support local farmers.
They are working closely with the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Interior and security agencies to help distribute agricultural produce, such as fruit from the eastern provinces, to different regions. They have integrated their work with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), the Thai Chamber of Commerce and provincial chambers of commerce to facilitate the distribution.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has assured the public that there will be no shortage of agricultural produce in Thailand, and that the ministry has prepared measures to help farmers affected by the COVID-19 crisis. (NNT)
