Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, prices of practically all the household amenities have skyrocketed, including food. Though the authorities have been very strict in trying to maintain the prices at low levels, it is practically impossible to control the hoarders and unscrupulous merchants who are taking advantage of consumers who are out buying their daily supplements.

Pattaya Mail reporters surveyed the markets in Pattaya March 31, and determined that the complaints from the public about high prices were true, especially the price of eggs.

Prices varied from shop to shop. A retailer in Soi Kophai, South Pattaya sells the jumbo-sized eggs at 140 baht per tray of 30 eggs, whilst the smallest no. 4 eggs sold for 100 baht per tray of 30 eggs.

This is a 20% increase from what they cost before the coronavirus crisis.

Some shops were even bolder in their pricing, selling an egg for 5-7 baht each.

Shops in Rattanakorn Market are selling medium sized eggs at an average of 90 baht per tray of 30 eggs. Purchases were limited to only one tray per customer.

Large chain supermarkets have also increased the price of eggs and customers are limited to buying a certain amount.

This policy is to prevent hoarders from buying a large amount to sell to consumers at extortionate prices. The government has assured the public that they will limit exports, so there will be an ample supply of eggs in the Thai markets for local consumption.
