Businesses at Maptaput industrial estate in Rayong have joined hands to promote their environmental friendly image in local communities in an effort to gain villagers’ trust towards their greener industrial operation.

PTT Chemical President and CEO Veerasak Kositpaisal, as the Community Friends Group chairperson, stated that the group and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) have jointly launched a project allowing 33 nearby communities to visit and inspect the group’s factories in Maptaput.

The Community Friends Group comprises five companies, including PTT Group Plc., Siam Cement Plc., BLCP Power Co., Ltd., Dow Chemical Thailand Co., Ltd., and Glow Energy Plc. Other companies outside the group joining in the pilot project are Rayong Olefins Co., Ltd., and PTT Chemical Plc.

Veerasak added that 36 factories in Rayong province are cooperating with the IEAT in a project to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, in which all companies have been developing a system to control the emissions. The cooperation will continue until 2014.

The president noted that 11 billion baht in additional investment will be used in an effort to cut VOCs emissions to less than 50% of the amount detected in Bangkok and vicinities.

Meanwhile, BLCP Managing Director Nitikorn Tantitham stated that his company runs a quality coal-fired power plant business in Maptaput, and it allows local communities to inspect its factories because it has confidence in all operational processes.
