Bangkok – 1 October, 2013: Thirty-nine Thai guides who have provided exemplary services to visitors were conferred awards at the bi-annual ceremony organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on 27 September, 2013, World Tourism Day.

The ceremony marking the 9th Thailand Tourism Awards was presided over by H.E. Mr. Somsak Pureesrisak, Minister of Tourism and Sports, who also conferred the Awards jointly with Mr. Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The gala event was attended by representatives of tourism operators, tourism associations, foundations and the media.

Initiated by TAT since 1996, the Thailand Tourism Awards are held bi-annually. The winners are announced on World Tourism Day.

The Awards are conferred on dedicated and professional tour guides to encourage them to aspire to high service standards as well as to encourage other tour guides to follow suit. They recognise the fact that tour guides are perhaps one of the most important points of contact for any visitor and play a critical role in helping promote a better understanding of a country’s culture and traditions and also create tourists’ confidence among Thai and foreign visitors.

Although most of the guides were in the English-speaking category, several guides proficient in Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Bahasa Indonesia were also among the recipients.

H.E. Mr. Somsak said, “I would like to extend the warmest congratulations to all the Award winners for their dedication and commitment as well my gratitude and thanks to the judging committee members for their time and effort. These awards will help Thailand remain a leader on the world tourism map, by ensuring that all our tourists and visitors, both domestic and foreign, get value for money and enjoy a high level of satisfaction.”
