Queen Sirikit Naval Medical Center rewarded 60 patients who’ve made tough choices to conquer their diabetes.
Chief of Medicine Capt. Nonglak Singhkowin said the Sept. 24 diabetes-awareness day, the hospital’s fifth such event, was meant to teach patients about the characteristics of the disease and how the hospital’s self-help group can assist them in controlling diabetes.
Sixty patients earned commendations for their work in controlling their diabetes. All originally had 8 percent higher blood sugar levels and some were suffering complications. They take oral medication and/or inject insulin to control the disease.
Residents have their blood-sugar levels checked during a Sept. 24 diabetes-awareness day at the Queen Sirikit Naval Medical Center.
Hospital director, Rear Adm Khanin Chumwornthayee, said the program has shown success in getting patients to make difficult behavioral changes to decrease blood sugar levels, including better eating and exercise habits.
He acknowledged that making such changes takes a large degree of patience and persistence. Therefore, he said, groups must be formed to sponsor and encourage efforts to care for oneself.
