BANGKOK, 10 October 2013 – The Irrigation Department is cautioning locals living along the Chao Phraya riverbanks in Greater Bangkok to closely monitor the water situation, with the period of high sea level having arrived.
According to department officials, the high sea level during October 9-12 may cause water to overflow the riverbanks, which will then inundate the communities along the riverbank segments that were not reinforced by flood barriers. The communities at risk are in Pathumthani, Nonthaburi and Bangkok.
At the same time, drivers of ferries on the Chao Phraya have been told to exercise the utmost caution against making waves, and to keep the speed below 25 kilometers per hour. They have also been told to make sure that the number of life vests on the vessels is adequate to accommodate all passengers.
