World’s top 6 teams enter Phuket beach volleyball

This year’s Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, the penultimate event of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will be graced by the top 6 teams in the world rankings.  The tournament, which will be held on Karon beach, Phuket from 29 October – 3 November is the biggest annual beach volleyball event in South-East Asia and the only event in Asia on the World Tour outside of China.

Heading the list of entries is the No 1 team in the world rankings, the Brazilian pair of Lima and Talita.  Playing together for the first time this year they have taken the sport by storm, winning no less than 5 Grand Slam tournaments to date at Shanghai, the Hague, Rome, Long Beach and Berlin.

The German team of Holtwick and Semmler who are ranked no 2 in the world have also entered and they have recorded 4 podium finishes this year.  Another Brazilian team, the Solgado sisters, Marie Clara and Carol who are ranked at no 3 in the world are back on the tour after a year’s sojourn and have been in scintillating form in the latter part of the season, recently winning the Grand Slam in Moscow.

Ranked no 4 in the world and regular visitors to Thailand are the Spanish pair of Liliana and Baquerizo.  They have been on the podium 3 times this year.  A third Brazilian team are holding down 5th spot in the world rankings, Lilli and Seixas are also medal winners on 3 occasions in 2013.  The no 6 team in the world rankings is another pair of sisters, Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger from Austria.

With the World’s top 6 teams confirming their participation in the Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, the tournament promises to be the most exciting ever in the eight years history that the event has been held in Thailand.

Admission to the tournament is free and a large sponsor zone on-site with activities and games will further enhance the spectator experience.  For beach volleyball fans who are unable to travel to Phuket, the semi-finals on Saturday 2 November and the finals on Sunday 3 November will be televised in Thailand and worldwide.
