CHON BURI,  Oct 23 – Long-term flood prevention measures will be needed for the Amata industrial estate which has been flooded for the last few weeks, Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk said today.

During an inspection trip to the industrial park in the eastern seaboard province of Chon Buri, he said that all factories have resumed operations and previously inundated roads inside the industrial zone were now completely dry.

He said flushing waters out of Amata estate was rather slow due to insufficient drainage channels while the volume of rainfall was at a record high for the last 60 years.

Amata management will have to build dykes some 60-100 cm high around factories and the drainage system must be improved, he advised.

The construction of new roads by the Transport Ministry must avoid blocking water passages into canals and the Bang Pakong River, he said.

Viboon Kromadit, Amata chief marketing officer, said the company’s management would urgently repair road surfaces, pavements and the landscape inside the industrial estate.

Residents of the areas surrounding Phases 7-9 of the industrial parks whose homes were flooded would be assisted, he said, adding that Amata managers would work with provincial officials in improving roads, digging canals and installing water pumps in neighbouring areas.
