BANGKOK, 4 November 2013 Buriram Province has held its “Long Boat Racing” festival to mark the end of the three-month annual Buddhist Lent.
The renowned “Long Boat Racing” festival was held in Satuek District of Buriram Province, with the cooperation between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the provincial office. The opening ceremony was chaired by House Speaker Chai Chidchob.
This year’s competition was divided into 3 categories: big boats, medium-sized boats, and small boats.
The Long Boat Racing Festival is one of the traditional activities that mark the end of the Buddhist Lent. The history of the festival can be traced back to the Ayutthaya period or about 600 years ago. The festival is usually held nationwide notably in Phichit, Phitsanuloke, Ayutthaya, and Buriram.
Boats used in the competition are made from special trees, while the rowing crews are trained to be as physically fit as possible and ready for the festival. Other than the competitions, visitors can also enjoy boat procession and other cultural performances.
