UDON THANI, 13 November 2013 A train derailed in the northeastern province of Udon Thani early on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to 14 passengers and 3 railway staff.
Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthiphan and State Railway of Thailand governor Praphat Chongsa-nguan visited the site of the derailment and told the press that one of the concrete slabs laid between rail tracks to allow cars to run over the rail more easily had tilted. This resulted in the train wheels running into the concrete slab, consequently causing the derailment. Officials believe the concrete slab became tilted after it was moved by the large number of cars running over it.
The train which was traveling from Bangkok to Nong Khai went off track at a railway crossing on the Mitraphap Road segment in Udon Thani Mueang district early Tuesday morning.
SRT governor Praphat has ordered officials to inspect all level-crossings between the Bua Yai station in Chaiyaphum and Nong Khai main station to make sure they are in good condition.
