For the past couple of weeks, Pattaya has endured grey overcast conditions with rain almost every day. It seems every week a new weather system develops in the South China Sea which brings widespread rain, cool conditions, and some flooding. It seems the Bunker Boys have been blessed so far by somehow avoiding most of it. Whilst it was raining in Pattaya Monday, the Bangpra course stayed dry. As for the course itself, it was back to peak condition; lush green, well-manicured with the greens getting back close to the speed for which they were once famous, the bunkers were well raked, and overall the course was excellent.
Geoff Atwell is becoming a regular in the winner’s circle, top-scoring again with thirty-three points. Les Cobban edged out Jimmy Carr for second place, he also took two near pins with a third going to Michael Brett.
Bangpra is known as the monkey course and Monday they were out in force. It seems they are unconcerned by lockdowns or social distancing and breeding like rabbits or monkeys as is the case, as their numbers swell to the point where a cull may need to be considered. Any golf bags left unattended is fair game for the little scavengers.
Wednesday, October 14th Royal Lakeside White tees

After three weeks of overcast grey rainy conditions, it was nice to get a bit of sunshine for Wednesday’s game at Royal Lakeside. The course had received a lot of rain recently and was damp underfoot, just about anywhere one could claim relief from casual water or a plugged ball. As a result, a decision was made to play from the white tees at six thousand three hundred yards.
Tony Robbins set a fast pace with twenty points on the front nine but faded on the back to take second place on thirty-two points. Geoff Parker is continuing on his good form and took first place with thirty-five points with Jimmy Carr in third place on thirty-one points. Only two near pins were won going to Les Cobban and Geoff Parker. Les gave an exhibition in driving with most of his drives going past two hundred and fifty yards. Unfortunately, his iron play was not up to his usual standard and the putter was very cold.
A return visit to Lakeside is on the cards as we were offered a very special deal for next month and with the weather now starting to dry up, the course should be in magnificent condition.
A very pleasant surprise was in store for the Bunker Boys back at Woody’s Bar for the presentation. Two of our members, Steve Durey and Stuart Brown, both of whom had endured long-term illness, made an appearance at the presentation. Despite both losing a lot of weight, we are delighted to report that they are on the mend again. Hopefully they will make a full recovery and get back on the golf course soon.
Friday, October 16th Greenwood B & C

Following the bright sunshine of Wednesday, it was back to dull overcast conditions again for Friday’s game at Greenwood where we were allocated the B & C nines. The course was fine till the seventh hole when the heavens opened and the rain poured down for about thirty minutes. Thereafter the course was very soggy and the earlier decision to play pick, clean, and place was justified.
As expected, the course played long and conditions were difficult. Remarkably the greens drained very quickly and were excellent for putting. The rough was wicked and anyone who strayed in there was severely punished. It was a case of getting out at the first attempt at all costs, otherwise, you were still in there for your next shot. It was no place for ambition.
Les Cobban took up where he laid off on Wednesday except that he brought the rest of his game, compiling a very good score of thirty-seven points to take first place. Second place went to Michael Brett on thirty-three points and Jay Babbin took third on thirty-one.
All the near pins were taken with Les Cobban taking two and one each to Jay Babbin and Michael Brett.
