BANGKOK 3 January 2014 Chairman of the Thai National Shippers’ Council Nopporn Thepsittha has expressed his concerns over the shutdown of Bangkok, saying he hopes the political conflict would end by January.
Mr. Nopporn stated his concerns over the political conflicts and the shutting down of Bangkok on January 13 that he hoped that the situation, regardless of the outcome, would come to an end by this January.
The Chairman of the Thai National Shipper’s Council added that the country must make it clear how it would move forward and seek a solution to the long-drawn conflict, or risk foreign direct investments outflows to other countries such as Myanmar and Vietnam.
According to Director of the Center for Economic and Business Forcasting Thanawan Polwichai, a shutdown of Bangkok would cause between 5 – 50 billion loss of revenue to the tourism industry. That is, if the shutdown only lasts a month or until the next general election date, February 2.
