BANGKOK, 6 January 2014 The Election Commission (EC) is hosting a meeting of political parties’ accountants to give them guidelines and regulations on election expenses of political parties and candidates. Accountants and financial officers from 38 political parties as well as provincial members of the EC are attending the event.
The meeting is chaired by EC Secretary-General Puchong Nutrawong and aimed at providing accountancy guidelines and standards set by the EC for all political parties contesting in the upcoming general election to follow. A total of 158 people are attending the event.
Mr. Puchong stated the purpose of the meeting is to create mutual understandings among political parties’ accountants regarding documentation process on the election-related expenses which must be reported in accordance with the standards set by the EC.
The event is expected to help reduce the number of court cases related to election expenses from 800 in the previous election, by 50% in the general election on February 2.
