Pitchaporn Petchchko moved to Pattaya to seek out better fortune after losing her cashier’s jobs in Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani. Instead, she spends her days waiting for free food.
Carrying her young child with her Feb. 10, Pitchaporn queued at one of the many food handouts organized daily around Pattaya to help the jobless and poor affected by the Covid-19 crisis. She said waiting has become a necessity.
Pitchaporn said she and her husband moved here to find work after she was let go by a large department store outside of Bangkok. Pattaya’s economy, however, is worse here than around the capital and she found there were no steady jobs here.
Both she and her husband pick up day-laborer gigs where they can, but even together they don’t make enough money to survive. So they’ve been forced to resort to taking charity.
With a vocational school degree in accounting, Pitchaporn said she hopes she’ll be able to find steady work again soon. Anyone in need of a cashier or accountant can reach her at 082-069-0875.
