Pattaya Cricket Club, affiliated with Pattaya Sports Club, returned home from Bangkok with the Plate trophy in the kit bag after a thrilling final last weekend.

PCC played Lanna Cricket Club from Chiang Mai in the final of the Plate competition on Sunday and having lost the toss were asked to bat.  PCC’s man of the tournament Dave Callick maintained his outstanding form with bat and hit a blistering 33no before retirement.  He was ably supported by John G who carried his bat for 24no and the team set LCC a challenging 71 runs.

Booby Young, looking sick with fright at the prospect of opening the bowling, conceded 17 runs but removed the opener with a well flighted yorker.  Dave C and Andy Emery pulled the game slightly back in favour of PCC but an over of 15 runs from captain Simon Philbrook left LCC needing only 11 from the last over to be bowled by Johnnie G to win.

When Shaun Jones held an excellent tumbling catch off the first ball PCC were favourites but the second ball was then dispatched for a maximum, putting LCC in the box seat and leaving just 5 required from 4 balls.  Two singles and a dot ball meant 3 to win or 2 for a tie.

When the batsman launched the final delivery skywards it looked like LCC had won but Andy had other ideas as he moved stealthily to his left, steadied himself and plucked the ball out of air.  The packed stand behind Andy all leapt to their feet and the PCC players celebrated wildly at the realisation of the win.  Booby nearly threw up again with excitement or relief, we are not sure.

It was the climax to a fantastic weekend of cricket, hosted by the Southerners CC and held at two venues, the Thai Cricket Ground and Harrow International School.  With 4 wins, a tie and only one loss (in the group stage against Southerners Gold) PCC can hold their heads high with all six players contributing.

PCC would like to thank the Pattaya Sports Club for their invaluable support and would like anyone interested in playing, supporting or officiating to visit our website at www.pattayacricketclub.com and get in touch.
