LOEI, Feb 18 – Thailand has officially opened a new custom house at the Thai-Lao border town of Tahli in northeastern Loei province.

Customs Department director-general Rakop Srisupa-at on Tuesday presided over the opening ceremony of the Tha Li Custom House located near the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge across the Hueang River in Ban Na Kraseng area of Loei’s Tha Li district.

Construction of the new border entry was completed in September last year, with a budget of Bt91 million. It aims at facilitating trade between Thailand and the Lao PDR. The facility is is divided into two separate buildings for both logistics purposes and people’s entry.

Meanwhile, land transport between the two countries has improved since the opening of the Friendship Bridge across the Hueang River in 2004. Travellers can now easily travel to Luang Prabang via the town of Xayaburi. The journey takes about six hours and covers a distance of only 343km while the Chinese border is only 267km beyond.
