Chonburi observed the 60th anniversary of Thailand’s Volunteer Defense Corps with awards, scholarships and gifts to local officers.
Gov. Khomsan Ekachai led the Feb. 10 ceremony at Chonburi Volunteer Defense Corps headquarters in Plasroi Sub-district.
The defense-volunteer corps were founded Feb. 10, 1954 by the Ministry of Interior to provide facilities and assistance to citizens nationwide and as an important grass-roots force working in cooperation with the government, police and military to maintain peace and security and assist during natural disasters.
The volunteers gained limited compensation and coverage for expenses in November.

The anniversary commemoration included a religious ceremony dedicating merit to the dead, presentation of the Defense Volunteers broach, presentation of the Chonburi Defense Volunteer commander’s trophy to the winner of Volunteer Friendly football game, and presentation of scholarships sponsored by the Foundation for the Volunteer Defense under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen to children of defense volunteers and government officials.
The president of Chonburi Interior Ministry’s Housewives Club and president of Chonburi Red Cross presented gifts to volunteers while blessings were given by the commander of Chonburi Defense Volunteers.
