BANGKOK, 27 February 2014 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will propose that the Center for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) invite United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to visit Thailand to engage in a discussion on resolving the current conflicts in the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Suraphong Towichakchaikun said the United Nations had previously helped to solve conflicts and unrest in many countries, and he believed the agency’s experience would contribute to finding an exit for Thailand. He also noted that it would be beneficial to have the UN start giving input now rather than later, as previous efforts by the agency to resolve conflicts only bore fruit when it was able to start tackling the conflict early on.

Mr. Suraphong revealed he had already spoken to UN Chief Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday morning about the matter, and expected an official invitation letter to be sent later. He also emphasized that the invitation was aimed at seeking suggestions based on the UN’s experiences, not an invitation for interference by the agency.
