Berlin – 12 March, 2014: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) presented three Green Excellence Awards at the ITB Berlin to recognise companies and individuals that have contributed to the cause of sustainable tourism development.

First conferred at the ITB Berlin in 2011, the annual awards are designed to promote tourism in accordance with the concept of “Thailand Goes Green”. The purpose is to support and encourage environmental conservation of tourism resources, both natural and cultural.

This year’s winners are:

1) Best Tour Operator: ID Reisewelt

2) Best Green Media: Mr. Marko Martin

3) Best Green corporate: Annex Power

HRH Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya will preside over the awards ceremony on   6 March, 2014, at the Thai Pavilion.

The winners were chosen by the TAT Frankfurt Office together with a committee of experts from diverse fields related to sustainable tourism and public relations firms with an established reputation in the German market.

Thawatchai Arunyik, TAT Governor, said “German and European travellers have long been showing a preference for sustainability in the choice of their travel destinations, accommodation and tour programmes. TAT is pleased to recognise and reward those companies and individuals showing a clear and proven commitment for this cause.”

Mr. Thawatchai said TAT believes in the power of positive motivation and reward as a means of encouraging best practises, at both the supply and demand sides. “It is very much in line with our ‘balanced strategy’ approach to Thai tourism as well as our commitment to Thai society and environment,” he added.

The Thailand Green Excellence Awards were originally launched in the UK in 2007 as a cooperative venture between the TAT London Office and responsibletravel.com, an online travel agent active in promoting green tourism. The two parties select tourism business operators including hotels and travel agents within the UK and Thailand, whose products and services help conserve tourism resources and sustainable development.

This concept is now being expanded to other countries in Europe. Germany was included for the first time in 2011.
