Pattaya business owners wanting the government to provide additional aid after declaring Chonburi a “dark red” coronavirus control zone got their wish Tuesday when the Cabinet agreed to extend financial support to certain types of businesses and their employees in the province.
Construction, entertainment, recreational activities, hotel, restaurant, retail, wholesale, vehicle maintenance, transport, warehousing, management, scientific and technical industry companies can qualify for the aid.
Employees in those sectors can receive 2,500 baht, plus 50 percent of their normal salaries up to 10,000 baht. The relief is only for one month, however.
Employers will be given 3,000 baht per worker up to 200 employees. Freelancers working in those sectors can each receive 5,000 baht for one month.
Interested employers and employees can apply or check for compensation at the Social Security Office and online. Filing should be completed within July, and money will be transferred after August 15.
City Councilman Sinchai Wattanasartsathorn, an advisor to the Pattaya Business & Tourism Association, said the relief is much needed as the private sector has cooperated with each government shutdown, largely without compensation.
While business owners realize cases continue to pile up and know they need to be patient, many small- and medium-sized businesses may not be able to survive much longer, he said.
