PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Monday, April 7, Burapha – Stableford
There was a qualifier being played on the B & D nines at Burapha today, Monday, whilst the finishing touches for the Singha Open were being added which started on Thursday. 23 players from the Outback were also there on A & C, not being quite good enough to play in the qualifier.
As far as today’s results, Bob Finley just goes from strength to strength, as he put together an amazing round to score 44 points off his handicap of 12 (down from 17 just 16 months ago), so is a single figure golfer fast approaching Bob? Barnsey also played well for his 41pts followed home by the improving Martin Kingswood on 40.
Wednesday pro-am group (from the left): Ron, Panawat, Geoff, Peter, Kerry, Mardan, Tim and Steve.
In Div B, the honours went to Jimmy Little on 37pts, from Peter Gwizdeck (36) with Bob Lindborg in third, also with 36pts.
There were two ‘2’s from Tony Aslett (14th) and Bob Finley (17th).
On Wednesday, we had two teams playing in the Pro-Am comprising of Ron Dickie, Peter Nixon & Geoff Stimpson and Steve Mann, Kerry Beck & Tim Knight. The pro in the group (Panawat Muenlek) was playing with a ‘work in progress’ set of clubs as he had his own clubs stolen from his car boot at his club in Bangkok but it didn’t stop him being 4 under for the day. The other team had the privilege of playing with Mardan Mamat, who has won three times on the Asian tour and once on the European tour.

Tuesday, April 8, Laem Chabang – Stableford
Our second visit to Laem Chabang proved very successful albeit that we struggled to get enough tee times, even though Jack had previously called them twice to increase our slots. On the day it did present Steve with a little bit of headache, as the starter didn’t have the same information as the Pro-shop. However, it all got sorted out eventually and the 26 players enjoyed their day playing the C & A nines.

It was reported that the C nine was not in as good condition as B last week but nevertheless, very acceptable but there was quite a lot of criticism about the course being set up very short.
In the top division, Kev McIntosh led the way with 41pts, five clear of club member Tony Garnett on 36, with Aussie visitor Martin Burbidge in third with 34.
Div B was won with the outrageous score of 44pts from Suzi Lawton. Second was Martin Kingswood with 37pts following his third at Burapha on Monday, so he’s on a roll. Peter Gwizdeck, who was second at Burapha, lost out on c/b to Martin and ended up third today, also with 37.
There was only one ‘2’ from Ron Dickie.

Wednesday, April 9, Bangpra – Stableford
Following the popularity of Bangpra through the high season, have decided to remain here on a regular basis during the low season. 17 players teed off on time in excellent conditions; it was a little slow as usual getting past the first par-3 but after that the round proceeded as normal.
There was only one division in which Tony McDonough took first place with 35pts, followed home by General Jack on 34. Svenn Lund (33) was third and Sugar Ray beat Martin Kingswood on count back, both scoring 30pts.
Bruce McAdam, celebrating his birthday, generously sponsored the near pins with some food & drink vouchers at the Outback and they were won by Sugar Ray (2nd hole), Mark Kembrey got two of them (8th and 12th) and the General picked up the last one on the 17th , where he drained the four foot putt for the only ‘2’.

Friday, April 11, Green Valley – Medal
33 players set off, amongst considerable controversy, to play in the April monthly medal using Green Valley’s revised layout for the first time for the Outback. The medal had been delayed for one week, as last Friday we were at St. Andrews.
So why controversial? The decision was taken to use the white tee on the left hand side of the first, which avoids having to cross the water – with some players this was met by opposition whilst others were thankful. It is not any easy decision to make and quite why a hole has two sets of white tees remains a mystery.
As to the golf, the heavy rain had a big say as a number of players (12 to be precise) failed to return a card. As to the new layout, many couldn’t get used to the fact that after coming down the old 18th, they still had more holes to play.
Tony McDonough remained undeterred by all the goings on, recording a gross 83, which believe it or not won him the low gross medal, for a net 67 – which won him the DeVere trophy for the month. Waldo was one back on 68, followed home by Tom Byrne (69) and Bob Lindborg (70).
Greg LeBlanc kindly sponsored four near pins today, which were won by Tom Byrne, Gerd Riedler, Paul Bourke and Steve Mann.
There were six ‘2’s from Tom Byrne, Kim Danboise & Stephen Mann (5th), Gerd Riedler (8th) and Tom Byrne & Kerry Rothman (16th).
