Myanmar to host the 24th ASEAN Summit at Nay Pyi Taw

BANGKOK, 7 May 2014 – Myanmar, as Chair of ASEAN for 2014, will host the 24th ASEAN Summit on May 10th &11th, 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw, on the theme “Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community”. 

The ASEAN Leaders will also meet with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Civil Society Organizations, and community youth with a view to promoting participation by all sectors of society to build a people-centered ASEAN Community.

The 24th ASEAN Summit offers an opportunity for ASEAN Leaders to review progress in ASEAN Community building and to identify priority issues that need to be expedited, as well as set future directions for ASEAN in the context of setting the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision, and to exchange views on important regional and international issues.

Meanwhile, the Thai delegation will focus on the acceleration of ASEAN Community building in key areas such as the promotion of shared norms and values, the elimination of non-tariff measures, harmonization of rules and regulations, and addressing trans-boundary challenges. They will also pursue development of the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision and the strengthening of the ASEAN Secretariat, while reviewing the ASEAN Organs, which are key to maintaining ASEAN as a region of peace and prosperity, and promoting ASEAN centrality in the regional architecture.
