BANGKOK, 27 May 2014  – Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has shown her interest in using the scanning electron microscope or SEM equipment for photographing purposes.

The Princess on Monday (May 26) paid a royal private visit to the National Nanotechnology Center, or NANOTEC, of the National Science and Technology Development Agency and the Nano Characterization Lab in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani province, where the Princess learned to produce a series of SEM images on specific items such as butterfly wing, abalone shell, lavender leaf, basil leaf and silkworm cocoon. After a brief training session by NCL Lab officials on the use of SEM equipment, Her Royal Highness worked on her own to produce various SEM images which are 40,000 times magnified.

The knowledge is useful to the investigation of specimens with a resolution down to the nanometer scale and can thus benefit the production of highly-strong materials such as bullet-proof vest and nanomedicine for curing cancer-infected tissues without damaging normal cells.

HRH interest in SEM images stem from having seen many excellent SEM images during both domestic and overseas trips. HRH is keen to understand the working mechanisms between the structure and functions of living cells in organisms. This quest for knowledge and understanding has encouraged HRH to want to produce SEM images of items that are of interest to HRH.
