The president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand warns that pork prices will rise further during the Lunar New Year unless the government controls the African swine fever which has caused the massive deaths and culls of pigs.
Surachai Sutthitham, president of the association, said that pork prices would continue to rise during the Lunar New Year because of its inadequate supply.
He said that the government had not come up with a clear solution to control the African swine fever (ASF) which caused the massive deaths and culls of pigs. He urged the government to quickly develop a vaccine for the disease because it was an emerging disease and there had not been a vaccine for it.
Besides, the government would have to solve the problem of expensive feed which was a factor that raised the costs of pig raisers, Mr Surachai said.
Temporary pig import could help curb pork prices but representatives of local raisers or the association needed to have their say in the amount of imported pigs and the duration of the import to protect local raisers, he said. (TNA)
