Foreign Ministry clarifies Thai situation at UN meeting

BANGKOK, June 12 — Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs  will explain Thailand’s situation to the international community in a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Spokesman Sek Wannamethee said Sihasak Phuangketkeow, permanent secretary for foreign affairs, left for the meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva from June 12 to 15 and would take the opportunity to explain situations in Thailand and give assurances that the country had a clear plan for reform and the next general election..

Mr Sihasak will inform the meeting that Thailand continue to respect human rights and is ready to join relevant activities with other countries. On the occasion Mr Sihasak will also meet the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Mr Sek also said that he and Col Weerachon Sukhonthapraphak, deputy NCPO spokesman, explained Thai situations to journalists at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand yesterday and they better understood the situations.

Regarding NCPO chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha’s meeting with 23 Thai ambassadors and consuls-general deployed in 17 countries and one special administrative area, Mr Sek said Gen Prayuth asked them to explain situations in Thailand and issues concerning the royal institution to foreign journalists in those countries.

Mr Sek said that the mass media retained their right to analysis but it had to be based on facts.
