BANGKOK, 14 June 2014 – RS Plc. promised on Friday to compensate those who had purchased its World Cup set-top boxes, after the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) agreed to pay the company to have all football matches broadcast through free TV.
It was earlier anticipated that only selected World Cup matches would be aired on free television channels, but the NBTC’s negotiation with RS to allow all matches to be aired on free TV meant buyers of the set-top boxes purchased them in vain.
Surachai Chetchotisak, the managing director of RS Plc., argued that some of the buyers might have purchased the boxes to also watch other sports events to which RS held exclusive broadcast rights. All types of buyers will receive compensation, the details of which will be released on Monday, after the company has had the chance to discuss the issue with the NBTC, he asserted.
Some shops that sell the company’s set-top boxes have reportedly returned hundreds of the products to RS, and called on the company to provide reimbursement for the end users.
