BANGKOK, 16 June 2014  – The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has revealed that electricity consumption in Thailand during the first five months was recorded at around 26,500 megawatts, down by 0.59 percent from last year.

EGAT stated that the reduction was due to an economic slowdown and political rifts. However, since May 2014, electricity consumption has increased 2.19 percent compared to the same month last year.

According to the EGAT Deputy Governor for the Transmission System, Mr. Suthon Boonprasong, electricity consumption has picked up again, thanks to a better political atmosphere and this year’s FIFA World Cup.

He also assured that the increased power usage would not have an effect on the production of electricity.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thienchai Chongpeepien, the EGAT chairman of the load forecast committee, stated that the resolved political tension and the nation’s economic recovery during the latter half of this year would have a positive effect on the nation’s GDP.
