The Ministry of Labor has indicated that a license renewal application from Amnesty International Thailand is still under consideration after the organization failed to comply with legal requirements in the country.
Labor Ministry Permanent Secretary Boonchob Suthamanaswong said a ministry panel will look at the renewal application submitted by Amnesty International Thailand after its license expired on January 20, 2022.
The panel will consider whether international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) comply with regulations provided by the Ministry of Labor. He added that factors such as conducting non-profit activities and not having political motives will be taken into account when considering the renewal.
The permanent secretary further noted that the organization failed to submit its six-month activity report and has been accused of taking a political stance that undermines the country’s stability.
Amnesty’s support for protest leaders who were already found to be in violation of the law by the Constitution Court has prompted outrage from critics who said that the organization is causing unrest in the country. A petition calling for Amnesty International to be expelled from the country has already received around 1.2 million signatures. (NNT)
