In response to media concerns that the government might be sabotaged during the two-day general debate beginning on Thursday (17 Feb), authorities have assured that coalition parties are united and there are no elements trying to sow division.
According to Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed Cabinet ministers to answer questions from opposition parties during the general debate. He said he believed it would be an excellent opportunity for the government to clarify to the public how it addresses major issues.
The prime minister also said he was not worried about government instability going into the debate. He made his remarks after some observers said the government could come under fire by ex-members of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) during the two-day session. The PPRP expelled 21 MPs, including former secretary-general Capt Thamanat Prompow, for causing internal party strife last month. 18 MPs have applied to join the Setthakij Thai Party, while the remaining three have joined the Bhumjaithai Party.
Meanwhile, PPRP leader Gen Prawit Wongsuwon expressed optimism that the former MPs will still support the government despite their differing viewpoints. His sentiment was echoed by Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul, who said he believes that around 260 MPs will side with the government in the no-confidence debate that is likely to take place this May.
