Asia-Pacific disaster risk reduction meet ends in Bangkok

BANGKOK, June 26 –Calling for quick recovery from disasters in Asia and the Pacific, the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) concluded in Bangkok today. 

Representatives of 63 countries attended the conference at the Bangkok Convention Center at Central World.

Results adopted at the Bangkok Declaration to enable Asia-Pacific to cope with and recover quickly from disasters will be proposed to a global conference in Sendai, Japan, next year.

Representing Thailand, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Interior Panadda Diskul said Thailand successfully organized the conference with participants from 63 countries including ministers and officials responsible for disaster response exchanged views and experiences for collectively reducing disaster risks in the region.

Mr Panadda said conference results will be proposed as part of the second-phase Hyogo framework for disaster risk reduction and presented in the Third World Conference on disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai city in March 2014.

Thailand’s Thani Thongphakdi, ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Geneva office, said the conference aimed to empower the region to cope with disasters as well as promoting investment in disaster response research in Asia and the Pacific to support such empowerment.
