BANGKOK, 4 July 2014 – Myanmar Supreme Commander Gen Min Aung Hlaing has paid a visit with his Thai counterpart and voiced his understanding of the Thai military’s intentions following the takeover, believing successful reform is within its reach.
At the invitation of the Thai military, Gen Min Aung Hlaing has paid an official visit to Thailand and has met with Thai Supreme Commander and Deputy Chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Gen Thanasak Patimapragorn with a view to strengthening military relations between the two countries.
During their discussion, the Myanmar general placed an emphasis on the continuation of strong friendship and sincere cooperation with Thailand. He lauded the Thai military for performing its duty in the most appropriate way, adding that soldiers were obligated to ensure the well-being of the nation and its people. Judging from the NCPO’s roadmap, he was adamant the goal of fostering reconciliation and reform would be achieved.
In return, Gen Thanasak assured his Myanmar counterpart that collaborations at the government and military levels would be even closer than ever from now on. He also promised to provide Myanmar workers in Thailand with proper welfare in line with the law and human rights principles.
Many other issues were also brought up during the talk, ranging from military exchange programs and joint exercises to the tackling of border issues, joint economic development and the preparation for the ASEAN regional integration.
