June 2014 PAGS Tournament

The day started off with some heavy rain as a prelude to the June PAGS tournament, held at Pattana Golf Club on Wednesday 25th.  The B & C nines was the allotted combination for the day’s field of 70 odd keen, but apprehensive players which included 10 ladies.

The weather conditions were not the best, with the rain bucketing down just as the first few groups were to get away.  Following some heavy overnight rain previously, the decision to have preferred lies on the closely mown areas, to help avoid the dreaded mud ball, was a welcome one.

As with most months, there is generally a standout performer or two on the day.  This month it was hard to split Bryan Neal, Steve Murray and Jack Grinvold for the clear star of the day title.  All three got 1st placings in their respective flights and all picked up at least 1 technical prize.  The best score of the day went to the B flight winner, Bryan Neal (15) with an outstanding 42 points, while Steve Murray (10) led the way in the A flight with 39 points, with Jack Grinvold scoring the coveted Low Gross of the day with a fine 76, under the conditions.

The Ladies  flight placings were hotly contested, with Orn  just getting the nod with 34 points while 2nd and 3rd required a count back to separate Suphattra Dulkys (26) and Ning Neal (12) after both signed for 33 points; Suphattra prevailing 18/15 on the back 9.

C flight went to Lloyd (28) with a good 38 points, just getting the better of Donel McGuinhan (22) with 37 points, who was in turn 2 clear of Erik Reginiussen (20) on 35.

Jari Laakkonen (17) got 2nd spot in B flight with a handy 41 points, while Ian Hunt (17) was in the bronze medal position in this flight.  As mentioned previously, it was Steve Murray leading the way in A flight, while Mika Viljakainen (7) did well to record 38 points for 2nd spot.  3rd place went to Jeff Wylie (6) on 36 points and a count back was required to separate Jeff, Jack & Olaf who had 18, 16 & 14 respectively.

It was still raining minutes before Dave and his team were setting up for the presentation buffet, but fortunately the showers ceased and everything flowed along smoothly.  As always, the Sportsman & Shenanigans crews did a fantastic job of keeping all the golfers and their guests satisfied.   We will all look forward to another successful tournament with this month’s event at Green Valley on 30 July.  Contact Shane on 085 945 9689 to ensure your preferred tee time.
