BANGKOK, July 23 — Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Permanent Secretary acting for the Minister of Foreign Affairs updated Thailand’s political developments to the 20th ASEAN-EU Foreign Ministerial meeting in Brussels, Belgium yesterday and today.

Mr Sihasak said that he told the meeting of the efforts to achieve national reform by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) through its three-phase roadmap with the main objective being to restore political stability and create an environment conducive to long-term economic development.

He said the explanation is important as reactions from the European Union (EU), the United States and Australia had been quite negative to Thailand’s political changes of May 22 and after.

Mr Sihasak said he wanted to inform other countries through his testimony at the meeting that Thailand remained a free society, playing an important economic role in the region.

Time is needed to create a genuine democracy and a provisional constitution has been endorsed by HM the King. The new document is considered a new starting of the process to democracy.

He asserted that Thailand maintained unhindered trade and investment relations with other countries.
