The Chinese embassy in Thailand has condemned a recent promotional video for the online shopping platform Lazada that sparked intense controversy.
In a Facebook post, the Chinese Embassy said it had noticed the incident and shares the same view that the content in the video was unacceptable. The statement drew positive reactions from the general public, who praised the embassy for recognizing the disrespect caused by the advertisement.
The promotional video for the Chinese-owned online shopping site, which was uploaded on Tik Tok on May 5, sparked widespread social media criticism for allegedly mocking people with disabilities and was also deemed offensive to the Royal Family.
Although Lazada and the agency that created the video, Intersect Design Factory Co, have since apologized, Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said authorities are preparing to take legal action and will investigate those involved in the project. He also warned other businesses operating in Thailand to ensure that their content is not offensive and to recognize and respect traditional Thai values. (NNT)
