BANGKOK, 8 August 2014  – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will convene its first session today to elect its speaker and two deputy speakers.

The NLA was opened after His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn yesterday presided over a ceremony at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.

The Prince told assembly members that they should realise the importance of their duties and be fully committed to working together and completing their duties scrupulously, correctly and quickly for the sake of national and public interest.

It is widely expected that former Senate speaker Teeradej Meepian, former deputy Senate speaker Surachai Liangboonlertchai and National Council for Peace and Order advisor Pornpetch Wichitcholchai will be nominated as NLA speakers and deputy speakers.

The NCPO has already approved 14 drafts to be tabled to the NLA next week, including those on land transport and intellectual property rights which will provide stricter regulations than in the past.
