The son a wealthy Thai lighting-store owner was arrested in Pattaya after allegedly racing his 10 million baht sports car down Beach Road.

Pattaya police Chief Col. Supathee Bungkhrong spotted the Nissan GTR cutting through traffic Aug. 9 and ordered traffic police to apprehend the driver. They did so at Walking Street.

Behind the wheel was 20-year-old Lertvarit Lertworapreecha, son of high-society figure Sirin Lertworapreecha, owner of the Degree Lighting chain, which has locations in Bangkok and throughout Southeast Asia.

Lertvarit apparently hadn’t been driving alone and when friends, each in their own expensive sports cars, learned of his apprehension, they arrived at Pattaya Police Station to spring their friend.

The publicity did not go over well with the trust-fund babies with some of the glammed-up women on the young men’s arms screaming at photographers to stop taking pictures.

Lertvarit’s pals didn’t anticipate police would check out their vehicles, however. One, a Mercedes-Benz, was found to have a license plate that didn’t match the registration. The driver, upon questioning, produced the real license plate, claiming he’d filed for a number change already.

Lertvarit was charged with reckless driving and paid 20,000 baht bail to get out of jail.
