CHIANG RAI, 25 August 2014 – An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Mae Suai district of Chiang Rai province early this morning.
The seismology office of the Meteorological Department reported that that locals in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai felt the earthquake, which occurred at 5:32 AM. There were no reports of damage or casualties.
The epicentre of the quake was reported to be about 6 kilometres underground, near the Chiang Mai province border.
Another 3.9-magnitude aftershock occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers in the same district.
A series of minor quakes have recently been reported in the northern province which straddles fault lines. A total of 274 aftershocks have been detected following the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Chiang Rai on May 5. Around 54,000 residents in seven districts have been affected by the quake.
