Regional police arrested two Chiang Rai men wanted for two armed robberies in Pattaya, one of which resulted in the death of a Korat man.

Narathip Kumphai, 30, and his brother, Chayanat Kumphai, 23, were captured Aug. 13 at a boarding house in Saraburi following the Aug. 10 and Aug. 12 robberies in Pattaya.

Provincial Police Region 2 investigators, working with Chonburi and Chachoengsao police, said the two men confessed to all charges, claiming they did it because they were unemployed.

Narathip is accused of shooting a 27-year-old man identified only as Piiyawat fatally in the head as they robbed him and 24-year-old “Tanyarat” in the parking lot outside their Pattaya apartment Aug. 12.

The two brothers had approached the couple as they sat in their car and demanded Tanyarat’s purse. When Piyawat fought back, Narathip shot him, police said. The victim died later in a Pattaya hospital. The brothers took the bag containing cash and a mobile phone.

Heavily armed police bring the ruthless criminals to the police station for interrogation.

That robbery came two days after the brothers allegedly carjacked a private-car driver waiting for passengers on Third Road. The two forced their way into the Toyota Camry owned by “Saharat”, 35, at gunpoint and drove him to a deserted spot where they put him in the trunk.

They then drove to Chachoengsao and dumped him on the roadside, telling him to run or be shot. The victim said Narathip fired one shot in his direction as he fled. The two brothers took the Camry and went back to Third Road to pick up their Nissan March, police said.

The two men were arrested with the two cars, a .38-caliber handgun and their victims’ property.

The brothers, both previously convicted of robbery and drug offenses, were charged with robbery resulting in death, conspiracy, using a vehicle in a crime, receiving stolen property, and illegal weapons possession and use.
