DNP reclaims more than 20,000 Rai of encroached forest

BANGKOK, 4 September 2014  –The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has reclaimed more than 20,000 rai of encroached lands, 10,000 rai of which are located in the Protected Area Regional Office 7, Nakhon Ratchasima Branch.

Thanya Netithamkul, the deputy director-general of the DNP, has revealed that evidence is being compiled to enable the reclaiming of land encroached upon in Phuket’s Sirinat National Park. It has been ascertained that there are 379 land plots totaling 2,743 rai that had illegally received title deeds.

He said that several civil cases were brought against encroachers in various sanctuaries and national parks, including a civil case filed against the Suan Chantaburi company worth 46 million baht, on a charge of encroachment in Chantaburi’s Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary. The Baan Phangam Resort was sued for damages valued at 18 million baht over encroachment on an area of 126 rai in Tab Larn National Park. Meanwhile, Sunthorn Rasamiruekset was charged with encroachment on 712 rai in Kanchanaburi’s Khao Laem National Park.
