Lawyer for Japanese father of surrogate babies submits client’s profile to police

BANGKOK, Sept 10 — The Thai lawyer of Mitsutoki Shigeta who hired 12 Thai women as surrogate mothers to give birth to his children presented the information to the Thai police and asserted that his client really wanted to have many children.

For the information provision, lawyer Kong Suriyamonthol met Assistant National Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Korkiat Wongworachart, for half an hour yesterday.

Gen Korkiart said that the lawyer handed information about Mr Shigeta that was certified by the Japanese Ministry of Justice, and that the Thai police would like the Japanese man to come to Bangkok to answer all questions.

However, Gen Korkiart admitted that Mr Shigeta was not legally required to come.

He said that Dr Phisit Tantiwatthanakul, owner of the All IVF surrogacy clinic which provided Mr Shigeta with the surrogacy services, had already been questioned and police would have to interview 10 more witnesses.

The police found nothing wrong with the babies alleged to be fathered using Mr Shigeta’s sperm found at a condominium on Lat Phrao Road recently.

Mr Kong said he presented information on his client’s education, background, financial status and child care plan.

His client’s parents are aware of Mr Shigeta’s 12 babies already born to surrogates in Thailand. including the latest one just born in Chiang Rai province.

Pol Maj Gen Naiyawat Phadermchit, commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 4, said that information from the lawyer was useful and police would try to meeting with Mr Shigeta as soon as possible.
