BANGKOK, 9 August 2014 — The Election Commission is in the process of checking on the background of more than 7,000 candidates who have applied to contest for the 250 seats in the National Reform Council.

The applications were accepted between August 14th and September 2nd. 7,370 candidates have their interest in vying for the seats in the NRC, exceeding the expectation of only 3000 candidates.

EC secretary general Puchong Nutrawong said their backgrounds would be thoroughly checked and the names of eligible candidates will be submitted to the selection committee by September 12th. The selection committee will then short-list the nomination list to 550 and submit it to the National Council for Peace and Order for final consideration.
