Justice Ministry talks AEC rights, crime suppression in Pattaya

Thai law-enforcement and government officials learned about human rights, governance and crime suppression under the ASEAN Economic Community at a Justice Ministry seminar in Pattaya.

Phitikarn Sittidej, deputy director of the ministry’s Department of Rights and Liberties Protection, chaired the Sept. 10 program at the Sandalay Resort, one of five education meetings planned by the department. About 100 government and law-enforcement officials attended.

The objective of the meeting was to educate people about the ASEAN Economic Community. Topics included an overview on the AEC’s governance by Usana Peeranon, director of the Political and Security Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and “Human Rights in the Context of the AEC” by Saree Nontasut, Thailand’s representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights.

The afternoon session covered crime suppression in the ASEAN region by employees of the Financial Assistance Department for Victims of Crimes and the Division of Rights and Freedom.
