Chonburi officials showed videos, staged plays and held activities to raise awareness about human trafficking for students, NGOs, community leaders and law enforcement.

Deputy Gov. Vorawit Saisuphatanaphol hosted a Sept. 19 forum at the Chon Inter Hotel. The forum was part of Chonburi’s response to Thailand’s downgrade on the United States’ annual Trafficking in Persons Report. Thailand was dropped to the lowest tier on the watch list, but avoided economic sanctions last week when U.S. President Obama waived penalties against the kingdom, citing “national security” concerns.

Nonetheless, the Chonburi Social Development and Human Security department is working to raise awareness, particularly among vulnerable children and teens, about trafficking.

The event consisted of a video presentation on human trafficking, recreational activates against trafficking, a short play and recreational activities by the Chonburi’s children and teenagers.

In addition, there was a seminar on protection alerts attended by department staffers, Chonburi police, leaders of child homecare and families, and the Mercy Center Pattaya Foundation.
