PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar
Monday, Sept. 22, The Emerald – Stableford
After a hearty breakfast we took off for Emerald, it being a lovely day but hot, not too used to heat like this at this time of the year. Anyway we got off to an early start and the course was in grand condition apart from the odd dry patch here and there.
With only a small field we got around in no time flat. It was Peter Terry who led the way today with 34 points and John Baikie took second with 31. There were no ‘2’s recorded.
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Green Valley – Stableford
We played St. Andrews today as Green Valley had a rather large tournament being played on it by the Bangkok Bank. We were competing for the monthly deVere trophy proudly sponsored by Brian Chapman from deVere’s. The course was in great condition with the greens being recently sanded and they were at their best, i.e. fast and true but not fast enough for one of my playing partners.

With 8 groups playing we were away on time and were very fortunate we didn’t get any rain on us, although it tried very hard for the last four holes with thunder and lightning around the hills but we finished dry.

We had a two way count back for third and fourth between Robbie Taylor and Chris Smith with Chris taking third with a fine 74 gross off his 2 handicap, edging Robbie after both returned 38 points each. Second place went to J.J. Harney with 39 points but taking the deVere trophy on the same score of 39 was Thip Sakulthip with 23 on the back nine.
There were two ‘2’s coming from Robbie Taylor and Lumpy Russell.
Friday, Sept. 26, Plutaluang – Scramble
We enjoyed another successful day at Plutaluang for our monthly scramble, with 14 groups out and a two-tee start. We were all away by about 9.45 and we literally flew around with no hold-ups at all. It was raining hard on the way to the course and was still spitting when we began playing but it didn’t stay around for long and the sun came out making for a great day for golf.
The course was in great condition even though they must have had a lot of rain and carts were still allowed on the fairways.
John Player had Wayne Cotterell especially flown in from the Central coast of NSW for the day with his new hat and because Sel Wegner couldn’t get the same flight he had to get another ringer in to make up the four-ball. The Courtyard Cavaliers, missing their star putter in Helmut, just couldn’t get the putts to drop and in all the months they have played in these tournaments they had their first ever bogie.

The scores were separated by only six shots overall which is pretty consistent golf. The prizes went down to fourth place and the team taking that spot consisted of James Savage, Ramsay Smith, Clive Bruce and Rick Culley, with a score of 59. Third place went to the team of Robert Cross, J.J. Harney, Ron Gale and William Macey, with a score of 58.4, and first equal with 57.5 was the team of John Player, Wayne Cotterell, Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) and Sunanta Duangwaw (Eng), tying it up with the boys from The Players Lounge, Bob Newell, Paul Bourke, Simon Philbrook and Bobby Young.
It was a fantastic day out for all and a big thank you from the Billabong to the players for making this tournament such a success. Hope to see you all next month.
