Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will this week begin his visit to ASEAN countries, and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar will be the first country in his visiting program.

His official visit to Myanmar is scheduled for 9-10 October 2014. The Prime Minister has chosen Myanmar as the first country on his visit because Myanmar is presently serving as the chair of ASEAN and is one of Thailand’s close neighbors.

The aim of the visit is to introduce himself after officially assuming office as Prime Minister of Thailand, and to promote bilateral relations. It is a tradition for all new ASEAN leaders to familiarize themselves with other ASEAN partners. During his visit, the Prime Minister will have a plenary meeting with Myanmar President Thein Sein. Major topics of discussion include economic and social issues, as well as efforts to step up cooperation.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister will meet Thai investors in Myanmar to discuss ways to reduce obstacles to their trade and investment there. A number of Thai entrepreneurs have been investing in Myanmar in various businesses.

Prime Minister Prayut is also prepared to attend the upcoming ASEAN Summit, to be held in Naypyidaw, the capital city of Myanmar; on 12 and 13 November 2014. He will take this opportunity to explain political developments in Thailand to delegates from other countries. The Prime Minister has also planned to visit Milan, Italy, for the 10th Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM 10), scheduled for 16-17 October 2014.
