National police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas opened a road traffic safety center to campaign for traffic safety during the New Year transitional period from Dec 29 to Jan 4.
Pol Gen Damrongsak said the center at the Royal Thai Police Office would implement road safety measures together with about 50,000 policemen who would be on duty nationwide to promote road safety during the seven-day New Year travel period.
“The 50,000 policemen will facilitate the trips of the people who will return to their home provinces. They will strictly enforce traffic rules and focus on four main offences which are drunk-driving, speed limit violation, failure to wear helmets and failure to use safety belts,” the national police chief said.
During the seven-day period, police would set up 3,771 checkpoints nationwide. They would conduct alcohol tests on all motorists involved in traffic accidents with casualties and those who resisted such tests would be considered as driving under the influence of alcohol, Pol Gen Damrongsak said.
For the upcoming New Year holiday, he expected 7.3 million vehicles to run between Bangkok and other provinces. The outbound traffic would peak on Dec 29 and 30 and the inbound traffic on Jan 2 and 3, the national police chief said. (TNA)
