BANGKOK, 30 October 2014  The 4th Army is planning to arm sub-district administration officials in the Deep South, so the latter can help boost security in their own locales.

Wednesday’s decision came after a meeting between Army Area 4 chief, General Prakan Chonlayut, and Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center Secretary-General Phanu Uthairat. The meeting was held to address the recent arson attacks on two sub-district administration offices in Pattani.

According to Gen. Prakan, those at the meeting agreed to integrate the sub-district administrations in the southern border provinces into the security network for the Deep South. Weapons and radio transceivers will be procured for sub-district administrations staff. More security personnel will also be hired to protect the sub-district administration offices. Personnel of sub-district administrations will undertake training to deal with security threats in their locales.
